Industrial & Enterprise Systems Enginnering Outcomes Survey

Industrial engineers design, develop, improve, and manage efficient systems.

The Industrial Engineering major encompasses the analysis, development, improvement, and implementation of all integrated processes and their components, including materials, equipment, information, energy, people, money, and time.

The field fuses engineering, business, and communications, drawing upon computer science, math, production management, process control, and psychology. Industrial engineers have the technical training and understanding of people to make improvements in efficiency and quality in any setting.

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering prepares you to work in a limitless variety of industries, including technology, health care, communications, manufacturing, and academia.

Industrial Engineering:

Industrial Engineering Overview

Track Options to help you shape the IE curriculum to meet your career goals.

  • Economics and Finance focusses on preparing students to think quantitatively about modern finance.
  • Human Factors/Ergonomics prepares students to understand, analyze and improve interactions between humans and other elements of a system, such as the work humans complete, the environment in which they work, technology they use, etc., in light of humans needs, abilities and limitations.
  • Industrial Engineering Fundamentals prepares students for managerial careers in a variety of industries. Students learn theories and techniques of using models, simulations, and data to evaluate performance of supply chain, service, production, and other systems to optimize operational efficiency.
  • Operations Research prepares our students with advance analytical methods to help make better decisions in a variety of industries.
  • Quality Engineering focuses on preparing students to think quantitatively about modern principles and practices of quality fundamentals.
  • Supply Chain, Manufacturing, & Logistics prepares our students with state-of-the-art logistics strategies, models, algorithms and tools for integrating the supply chain in ways that reduce system-wide costs, and improve system-wide service.

Systems Engineering and Design

Systems engineers combine engineering design, sciences, business, and communication to solve problems.

The Systems Engineering & Design major is a uniquely interdisciplinary program, with broad flexibility and student-guided focus. Our students and graduates tackle complex engineering and business situations.

We train you in all aspects of systems design, project management, working in multiple disciplines, and getting results in a real world, team environment. Research problems in faculty laboratories, summer internships, and the Senior Engineering Project complement the classroom curriculum with hands-on experience working for industry.

The Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering & Design prepares you for graduate school or all aspects of industry, including product design, healthcare, consulting, environmental stewardship, government, and business.

Systems Engineering & Design: Pre-approved Secondary Field Options to help you engineer your career:

  • Automotive Engineering provides students with foundational knowledge required for engineering practice and research in automotive systems.
  • Autonomous Systems and Robotics prepares you for understanding the synergistic interactions between algorithms, controls, electronics and mechanical components underlying such systems.
  • Bioengineering prepares students to apply engineering principles to analyze and design biological systems for use in healthcare or biological systems.
  • Business Systems Integration and Consulting prepares students for careers in business analysis, managerial consulting, and in database applications pervasive in enterprise and global organizations with B2B and other highly integrated systems. Students with this training are sought by large consulting firms and globally distributed corporations for their engineering systems knowledge in production, marketing, finance and accounting.
  • Civil Engineering Structures prepares students for their careers in industry addressing design problems related to civil structures.
  • Computer Science is a problem-solving discipline that requires an awareness of what can be accomplished with the infrastructure that is available today.
  • Construction prepares students to start their careers in industry addressing problems related to construction and planning or to continue their education in graduate school with a focus on construction.
  • Control Systems prepares our students to design and control these dynamic systems and offers a hands-on training in our labs equipped with various electromechanical systems including an analog computer, motors, pendula, and autonomous vehicles.
  • Digital Prototyping prepares students for the digital generation of product models, with special emphasis on the up and downstream uses of these models for conceptualization, simulation, prototyping, manufacture, and visualization.
  • Engineering Administration prepares students for analysis and operational management of engineering systems.
  • Engineering Marketing trains engineering students with basic marketing skills.
  • Environmental Quality helps gives students an understanding of the tools and tradeoffs in helping us sustainably engineer our environment.
  • Internet of Things give students the tools for understanding our connected world.
  • Manufacturing Engineering introduces the tools and techniques for advanced manufacturing, which coordinates information, automation, computation, software, and sensing to manufacture existing products, and especially manufacture new products.
  • Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation gives students knowledge to design a system, component, or process to meet desired specifications, including design for inspectability/sustainability and life extension.
  • Operations Research prepares our students with advance analytical methods to help make better decisions in a variety of industries.
  • Rehabilitation Engineering helps students understand how to help the human body re-engineer itself.
  • Theoretical and Applied Mechanics provides a strong background for students to start their professional career as design engineers or to pursue advanced graduate degrees in several other disciplines.
