Sustainability and Resilience

Engineering systems for a sustainable future. Designing resilience for a changing world.

Sustainability and Resilience research in ISE applies advanced systems thinking, optimization and technology to create solutions that are both environmentally responsible and economically viable. A central focus is reducing waste and improving energy efficiency, ensuring processes and products are designed with long-term sustainability in mind.

By integrating business fundamentals with engineering innovation, our researchers are designing clean energy systems, resilient energy grids, transportation infrastructure and low-cost recyclable products. Critical infrastructure resilience is also a priority—strengthening logistics, energy, financial, and cybersecurity systems against disruption and the challenges of aging infrastructure. Across these efforts, ISE delivers adaptable solutions that prevent system failure and build a more sustainable, resilient future.
