Henrique Reis
Professor, Industrial & Enterprise Systems in Engineering

Henrique Reis completed his graduate studies in mechanical engineering at MIT, where he specialized in composite materials. He worked on his Ph.D. dissertation on dynamic plastic buckling of shell-like structures. In 1980, he joined the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign faculty and has been working in nondestructive testing since 1984. Reis currently holds the position of full professor at ISE, where he teaches courses in theory of elasticity/strength of materials, design and nondestructive testing and evaluation to undergraduate and graduate students.

Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions in several areas, including advanced sensors, diagnosis/prognosis of advanced materials and components, including structural health monitoring, machine condition and process monitoring/control, and material characterization of advanced composites. He firmly believes that nondestructive testing and evaluation knowledge should be incorporated into the engineering undergraduate design curricula. He was one of the first faculty members to develop an NDT&E course for undergraduate engineering students as an elective.

Reis has chaired sixteen national and international conferences on nondestructive testing and evaluation. He is a fellow of the American Society of Nondestructive Testing, British Institute of Non-destructive Testing, and Acoustic Emission Working Group. He has received several awards, including the 2001 Space Award by the Space Society, 2002 ASNT George L. Pherigo Citation Award, 2015 Founders Award by the ASME Diagnosis and Prognosis Division, 2016 ASNT Award for Sustained Excellence, 2020 ASNT Lester/Mehl Honor Lecture Award and 2022 ASNT Gold Medal Award.
