Official Description

Design of basic engineering components: structural members, machine parts, and connections. Principles applied include: material failure (yield, fracture, fatigue); buckling and other instabilities; design reliability; analytical simulation. Course Information: 3 undergraduate hours. No graduate credit. Prerequisite: GE 311 and GE 320. Class Schedule Information: This course is an approved Design Elective in the GE Undergraduate curriculum.

Course Description

Topics in the design of machine components and building structural members are discussed with the goals of applying students' prior knowledge of mechanics and introducing standard practices. Common themes include the modeling of loads and material response, and the investigation of the limitations of these idealizations under real-world conditions. Design methods based both on stress analysis, including fatigue, and on codes and standards are studied. A design project and report are required. Prerequisite: GE 311 and GE 320. No graduate credit. Prerequisite: GE 311 and GE 320.
