Zhenyu Hu and Seyed Jalal Etesami have been awarded the Jerry S. Dobrovolny Award for Leadership and Scholarship.
The $1,000 scholarship is given to General Engineering seniors with outstanding leadership qualities and academic scholarship, based off of their participation in campus and student societies and organizations. Students use this scholarship to attend a conference of their choice.
Hu will attend the ‘INFORMS Annual Meeting’ conference. INFORMS is a society for those in the field of operations research, management science, and analytics. Its annual meeting includes sessions and papers related to those fields. “I feel very honored and glad about receiving this scholarship,” Hu said.
Etesami plans to present his paper "Learning Causal Interaction Network of Multivariate Hawkes Processes" at the 2015 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT) in Hong Kong.
Beginning in 1988, this annual scholarship was created to honor former Department Head of General Engineering Jerry S. Dobrovolny. After completing his B.S. in General Engineering in 1943 and his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1947 from the University of Illinois, Dobrovolny joined the Department of Engineering and was Department Head from 1959 until his retirement in 1987. He is the co-author of several textbooks and workbooks and the author of the book: A History of the Department of General Engineering, 1868-1995.
