Two ISE faculty members are being recognized this year for excellence in teaching. Their connection makes the moment even more meaningful, as a mentor and mentee are honored together.
Professor Chrysafis Vogiatzis has been selected for the campus-level Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. This is one of the University’s highest honors for sustained impact in undergraduate education. He teaches courses including Analysis of Data, Simulation with Applications, and Operations Research for Social Good, where he has been widely recognized for innovative, student-centered instruction and the development of flipped and active learning approaches that bring real-world systems thinking into the classroom. His teaching and mentorship span both undergraduate and graduate levels, with a focus on making complex analytical methods accessible and engaging for students across disciplines.
His mentee, Professor , has been named a recipient of the . This award recognizes outstanding development or use of new and innovative teaching methods. A faculty member in ISE and affiliate of the in AHS, Gupta teaches undergraduate courses such as Facilities Planning and Design, and Simulation Modeling. He also teaches Hardware and Software Engineering courses in the . His work explores how emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and eXtended Reality can improve efficiency, spark curiosity, reflection, and deeper learning in engineering education. His research focuses on human extended reality interaction () in healthcare, including projects that use virtual and mixed reality to enhance training for medical training, education and support cognitive and social engagement among aging adults.
This recognition reflects a shared commitment to teaching excellence and a culture within ISE where mentorship helps that excellence evolve across generations of faculty.
