    • Abstract: The company manufactures vapor and flame control technologies to protect workers, facilities, and loss of products. The company serves a range of industries including, but not limited to, food and beverage, oil and gas, and pharmaceuticals. The company sells vent products that are losing market share to competitors in the European market because of its inferior overpressure performance. The company would like to improve flow leaving the vent near 10% overpressure of the vent’s setpoint. To achieve this level of performance, the pallet assembly, responsible for opening the vent at the appropriate pressure, requires evaluation, redesign, and testing. At low overpressures, the pallet assembly enters a fluttering stage that causes suboptimal flow out of the vent. The current pallet system consists of weights for setting specifications, rods for alignment, and a plastic diaphragm for a uniform seal. Several designs were tested using computational fluid dynamic software, varying pallet dimensions, geometries, weight distribution, and diaphragm materials. The ability to simulate a range of designs and complete on-site testing allowed the team to thoroughly explore multiple design options to optimize the solution. Ultimately, simulations and testing show that increasing the length of the pallet skirt was the most significant factor to increase flow at low overpressures. The dimensional change to the pallet can be implemented with similar costs and would be backwards compatible with existing models, further increasing sale potential. The team recommends that the company implement pallet design 12, long and angled skirt, an increased fillet radius, and a notched bottom, into production for future sales.
