Frequently Asked Questions
For those of you who are being automatically transferred to the NEW GE/IE curriculum or are planning to switch to the NEW GE/IE curriculum and currently registered under the OLD GE/IE curriculum for Fall 2010(courses such as Phys 214, Math 225, TAM 210, ECE 204/205, etc.), you may stay with your current schedule and refer to http://ise.illinois.edu/ugrad/courses/crsconversion.pdf for course conversion. Fall 2010 semester will be considered your ‘transition’ semester and you will need to follow the NEW GE/IE curriculum requirements in future semesters.

When will I need to make a final decision on whether to switch to the new curriculum?
There is no deadline; however, the sooner you make your decision, the less likely of taking unnecessary courses.

Can I combine the old and the new curriculum?
No. You must choose the old curriculum or the new curriculum.

I'm graduating in December 2010, January 2011, or August 2011. Why can't I switch to the new curriculum?
The new curriculum doesn't officially start until Fall 2011. You may not have a catalog year that starts after your graduation date.

Is GE 400 still required for the General Engineering curriculum?
GE 400 is a required course in the old GE curriculum, but will no longer satisfy the Advanced Composition requirement. GE 400 is not required in the new GE curriculum, but is a required course for certain SFOs.

If GE 400 is no longer an Advanced Composition course, does that mean I need to find a replacement?
No. GE 494 will satisfy the Advanced Composition Requirement.

The courses I need to complete my degree in the old curriculum are no longer offered. What do I do?
There is a course conversion chart available that shows what courses will automatically be counted for other courses in the new or old curriculum.

Do I need to take GE 100 as a sophomore or junior?
No. GE 100 will be waived.

Do I need to take IE 311 if I'm taking IE 310 this semester (Fall 2010 or prior)?
No. IE 311 is embedded in IE 310 if the course is taken Fall 2010 or prior.

If I switch to the new IE curriculum, do I need to go back and take GE 161?
Yes.

Can I take two Track Options?
You may take courses in other Track Options. You may only declare one Track Option and the College of Engineering will only track one Track Option.
