The monolithic systems lab conducts research in the design and manufacturing of engineering artifacts that are made one-piece or monolithic. Typical examples of monolithic systems are compliant mechanisms, that perform useful work due to elastic deformation and soft robots that inflate like balloons to move. The lab houses a novel polymer workstations, 3-D printers, CNC mills for manufacturing and a testbed to validate novel pneumatic actuators for manufacturing automation, assistive robots, rehabilitation and space applications. Furthermore, the lab facilities are used to develop hands on projects for GE 310 (Systems Engineering and Design Design), GE 411 (Reliability Engineering) and GE 598 (Compliant Systems Design).
